“Self-promoting w/o being a jerk” — good topic?

May 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today’s podcast is about how to be self-promoting without being a jerk about it. I think it’s one of my better podcasts. What do you think? Should this be expanded into a chapter (or part of a chapter) in the book?

If so, do you have specific examples, questions, stories, etc. that you’d like me to elaborate on? This could be done as a pretty brief topic, or as a pretty big one…

    Hey Stever!

The one most important point I’d like to stress is to remain positive in self-promoting. It’s often been said that in an interview, one should never badmouth a previous employer, and this holds especially true when dealing with prospective customers and mentors as well.

Also, it’s important to remember the point of the promotion itself. For my business, I like to focus on skills specific to what the customer needs. It is not, however, a good idea to use self-promoting to boost one’s ego. Focus on what’s important, and avoid language which seems ego-based (”I myself,” “solely me,” “my own skillset,” etc). Doing reports, summaries, etc. in passive voice can help with this.

    I hope this helps!
    Take care,
    Rob
