SR, Susan Jacoby has a lot of insight into this broad topic of "monitoring data." I'm sure she's on your radar, but if not you might enjoy her analysis.

Pat M, your point is well-taken. I vastly overgeneralized. I'd just read an article on global warming that devoted about 2/3 to skeptics and "uncertainties" and about two sentences to IPCC. I took that one example and made a sweeping statement about the profession.

An excellent site on the state of journalism is http://www.journalism.org. One of the surveys in a subsite is http://tinyurl.com/3ts45r, which discusses jouralists' perceptions of the state of journalism.

Note that in none of that is the issue I raised of giving equal time to unequal points of view mentioned.

". Journalists no longer seem to research issues, but rather just present people of differing opinions and let them slug it out. Journalists overlook the fact that one person might be a recognized leader in their field with two hundred peer-reviewed papers, and the other a lobbyist for a special-interest group with a vested interest in suppressing the science. It’s bizarre."

Unfounded, totally biased statements really help the validity of your argument.

I cannot believe that you believe that people are causing global warming. It is even funnier to see that you think people can prevent it.

Do not rely on intergovernmental panels to do your thinking for you. Get out in the sunshine. Our air is much less poluted than it was.

There in lies the problem. When you're lied to as a child and you see society accepting stupidity (top down) people would rather go along with what everyone else believes than be an outsider. Ego and ignorance are the problems. I don't believe a higher being is impossible. I do however refuse to believe in something that cannot be observed or proven. My life doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things and I'm okay with that. I'm betting most people aren't. Maybe 1 in 1 billion matter now. There are so few relevant discoveries that actually help man, most of us (myself included) are just leaches. Taking advantage of those that contributed before us.
